The south part of Iceland has been the scene of many historical events, a number of them taking place in short distances from Hvoll Cottages. One of the most famous of the Icelandic Sagas, Njálssaga, takes place just west of where we are placed.
From the location of the cottages you can for example see the famous Eyjafjallajökull, the glacier mountain that erupted in 2010 resulting in a cloud of ash shutting down many airports in Europe and disrupting air travels of thousands of airline passengers, as well as Mýrdalsjökull glacier. You can also for example see the peculiar peninsula Dyrhólaey and the basalt sea stackone Reynisdrangar, couple of Iceland's more famous landmarks, or take a walk on the nearby black sand beaches.
Furthermore, just east of our cottages you can find the decaying wreck of a Douglas C-117 US Navy airplane that crashed on the black beaches of Sólheimasandur in November 1973. The wreck has become a popular tourist attraction especially after it featured in music videos made by the Icelandic band Sigurrós and the Canadian pop star Justin Bieber.
